On 6 October the US embassy in Russia issued a health alert citing press reports of a suspected fatal pneumonic plague case and hospital quarantines in Irkutsk. It repeated the State Department's existing Level 4 "Do not travel" advisory (in place since December 2025), which says US citizens in Russia should depart immediately. Newsweek notes it was not a new travel warning; some outlets reported it as a plague-specific call to leave.
