Cause of death was plague

Several outlets and the head of Buryatia said the worker died of plague (most say pneumonic plague). Rospotrebnadzor says it was pneumonia of undetermined cause with no work-related pathogens found, and former chief sanitary doctor Gennady Onishchenko said it is “unlikely to be plague”.

Analyst note: Likelihood set by analyst to 45%: the official denial is countered by quarantines at several hospitals and reports from medical staff. Buryatia head Tsydenov first wrote that she died of plague, then edited his post to “possibly died of plague” (Meduza). Treat as unresolved.
